International Mission OSH June 2016

Originating in 1997, OSH conducts 5 different International Missions a year and operates a fully equipped clinic that conducts daily surgeries on facial malformations.

From the 19th till the 26th June, Operation Smile Honduras carries out their third International Mission of 2016. The event takes place in Hospital Maria, a pediatric public hospital in Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras.

On Sunday 19th June OSH evaluated 150 potential patients at their clinic and conducted medical tests.

The children and their parents stay at a shelter nearby the hospital. Operations started on Monday 20th June and will go on throughout the week. OSH is hoping to operate 95 children in total during this week, of which 20 children have already been operated on Monday the 20th.

After the patients are operated, the doctors carry out a post-operational check and the patients can return to their home towns once given a clean bill of health. Some children are required to come back to the clinic in the upcoming months for check-ups, or more surgeries if needed. Accommodation and all medical costs are borne by Operation Smile Honduras.

Operation Smile Honduras is able to conduct these International Missions thanks to a large group of volunteers from different parts of the world, composed of plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, administrative people, etc., reinforcing the local medical and non-medical team.
