BACK TO BASICS: What actually makes you good at your job?
People often ask me what I do, and I usually say something like, “I work in Global Mobility” or “I help companies relocate their employees.” But the truth is, it’s so much more personal than that.
At its core, my job is about supporting people through one of the most significant transitions in their lives. A relocation isn’t just a move. It’s change, uncertainty, excitement, stress—typically all at once. It’s families leaving behind what’s familiar and stepping into something completely new.
I didn't always understand that. When I started in this industry 11 years ago, I thought the job was about operations, getting boxes from point A to point B, booking freight timely, hitting delivery windows, managing cost, etc. Yes, all that matters, but what I've learned has very little to do with shipping containers, and everything to do with people.
IT STARTS - AND ENDS - WITH YOUR RELATIONSHIPS
Early in my career, I spent a lot of time focusing on outcomes—crunching the numbers, delivering results, and proving value. As I grew in this industry, I learned that the most meaningful and lasting success comes from something much simpler; showing up consistently for people.
A close colleague of mine once shared something that really stuck with me. That the best partners aren’t transactional, they’re the ones who take the time to understand the people behind the work and show up, again and again.
That’s the standard I hold myself to today.
I’ve learned that relationships don’t always pay off immediately. Sometimes they take months—or even years—to come full circle. However, when you invest in people the right way, with authenticity and consistency, trust builds. And in this industry, trust is everything.
Balancing Expertise with EMPATHY
Of course, technical expertise matters. Consulting mobility leaders on household goods programs, navigating global moves, understanding policy structures, those are all critical parts of what I do.
What I believe that truly sets someone apart in this field is the ability to balance that expertise with empathy. Because behind every policy is a person. Behind every move is a story.
I’ve worked with people moving across the country and across the world, each one carrying their own concerns and questions. What I’ve found is that people don’t just need answers; they need reassurance, clarity, and to feel understood.
That’s something I never lose sight of because relocation isn’t just a process, it’s a major life change.
Thinking Beyond THE Logistics
One of the biggest shifts in my own career has been moving from a service mindset to an advisory mindset. There was a time when I thought success meant flawless execution. Now, I think differently.
My role is to help organizations think beyond logistics. To help HR and global mobility leaders step back and ask:
- What kind of experience are we creating for our employees?
- Are our programs aligned with our talent strategy?
- Are we truly supporting people—not just moving them?
When you can shift the conversation that way, the work becomes much more meaningful. It becomes less about transactions and more about impact.
Building A Community Along the Way
One of the things I’m most passionate about is bringing people together.
Whether it’s through hosting events, sharing market trends or networking at industry conferences, I’ve always believed that we learn best from each other. Some of the most valuable insights I’ve gained in my career came from conversations with peers navigating the same challenges.
Creating space for those conversations and being part of a community that genuinely supports one another has been incredibly rewarding. It’s also a reminder that none of us do this work alone.
What I’ve Learned About People (and Myself)
If I reflect on what has truly made me successful in this role, it comes down to a few core things:
- Empathy – understanding what someone is going through
- Consistency – showing up, even without immediate outcomes
- Curiosity – asking and listening
- Authenticity – being myself in how I connect
- Patience – more so with myself, an ongoing practice
In recent years, I’ve realized that being present and continuing to develop your expertise will get you in the room, but those qualities are what keep you there.
Why OUR Work Matters
After more than a decade in this industry, the thing that still resonates with me the most is the impact we have on people’s lives.
We step into moments that are often filled with uncertainty and we have the opportunity to make them smoother, more supported, and more human.
Because at the end of the day, we’re not just moving employees. We’re helping people navigate change, support their families, and step into new chapters of their lives.
In the end, my job isn’t about relocating people and their personal belongings, it’s about how we show up for them when it matters most. And if I’ve done my job well, they don’t just remember the move, they remember how they felt through it.
